چکیده

Several studies attempt to describe changes in the spatial patterns of forests over time, resorting to the comparison of landscape pattern indices (LPI), but new methods for quantifying landscape differences in a statistical context are necessary. In this paper, we quantified and assessed the statistical significance of the forests pattern changes, which have occurred since the end of WWII in Central Italy (Isernia). To do this; based on the proportion of forest cover (pi) and contagion (H) of three land cover maps (1954–1981–2006); we generated 100 forest maps with predictable results through the midpoint displacement algorithm. Then, for both observed and simulated maps, we computed a set of LPI (number of patches, cohesion, largest forest patch index and area weighted mean shape index) and we derived their empirical distributions; finally, we compared the empirical distributions using the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test. Our results show significant changes in the spatial pattern of forests and underline the process of natural forest re-growth, which, in the area, is constrained by ―remnants‖ of traditional activities. The adopted approach could be extended to a large ensemble of landscapes and spatial scales and could become a standard procedure when comparing patterns in time.

Land use changes analysis and prediction using remote sensing and QGIS MOLUSCE Plugin in the Siahkal County

Quantifying land use change dynamics is critical in tackling environmental and socio-economic challenges such as climate change in recent years. This study takes Siahkal County in Guilan Province as the research subject and analyzes the land use changes in two different years: 2000 and 2021, and predicts the change in 2031. We carried out land use change analysis using LANDSAT-7 ETM+ and LANDSA...

Long-Term Fire Regime Estimated from Soil Charcoal in Coastal Temperate Rainforests

Coastal temperate rainforests from southeast Alaska through to southern Oregon are ecologically distinct from forests of neighboring regions, which have a drier, or more continental, climate and disturbance regimes dominated by fires. The long-term role of fire remains one of the key outstanding sources of uncertainty in the historical dynamics of the wetter and less seasonal forests that domin...

Spatial Distribution of Tree Species Governs the Spatio-Temporal Interaction of Leaf Area Index and Soil Moisture across a Forested Landscape

Quantifying coupled spatio-temporal dynamics of phenology and hydrology and understanding underlying processes is a fundamental challenge in ecohydrology. While variation in phenology and factors influencing it have attracted the attention of ecologists for a long time, the influence of biodiversity on coupled dynamics of phenology and hydrology across a landscape is largely untested. We measur...

A large-scale forest landscape model incorporating multi-scale processes and utilizing forest inventory data

Two challenges confronting forest landscape models (FLMs) are how to simulate fine, standscale processes while making large-scale (i.e., .10 ha) simulation possible, and how to take advantage of extensive forest inventory data such as U.S. Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data to initialize and constrain model parameters. We present the LANDIS PRO model that addresses these needs. LANDIS PRO...

A simulation study of landscape scale forest succession in northeastern China

Changbai Natural Reserve in northeastern China provides an excellent opportunity to explore how temperate and boreal forest ecosystems in northeastern China will evolve and recover over large spatial and temporal scales. Such studies are increasingly needed to design scientifically sound forest management and restoration plans in this region. Long-term (300 years) successional trajectories of t...
